The building and its market setting
The hall combines early twentieth-century design with a history as a food market. Architect Naum Torbov designed the building, whose construction began in 1909 and took two years. It covers 3,200 square metres, and its metal structure reflects pavilion architecture popularized at the Paris World Fair in 1900.
Look for the relief of Sofia’s coat of arms above the main entrance and the small clock tower above the building. The covered market was planned for meat, dairy products, poultry, fish, vegetables and fruit.
It reopened in 2001 after renovation, restoration and reconstruction. Archaeological remains from the Roman period were uncovered and displayed in the basement during that overhaul; remains from ancient Serdica are also displayed on the ground floor.
